High Quality Item with Unusually FAST Shipping, 20 Jun. 2013

The item is inexpensive for what you're getting. I didn't expect much as I see these priced at £3 or £4 individually. However, the quality of the rotary knobs is actually really good. I consider these to be a real bargain. Internally each of these has 20 switch contact points per 360 degree turn. They have a nice feel to them. 20 is just about right for every day electronics projects. Excellent for Arduino projects and things of that nature. Each unit has the added bonus of having a push switch. The distance travel for this is tiny, which I like. It's just firm enough that you won't accidentally push it by mistake. It has three pins on front and two pins on rear.

One other thing worth mentioning. It's "somewhat" breadboard friendly. It's designed exactly right to accommodate the centre channel on a breadboard which helps keep it in place. The pins are long enough to make proper contact but it's a bit wobbly. You just have to make sure that the encoder remains...

They're OK for Experimentation Purposes, 17 Nov. 2014

I'm revising my review of this item. Really because I've found that after a while, they can be a little 'unstable' and output can become a bit jittery. Physically, they have a nice action with clearly felt detents at each step. The button action is nice as well. The rotary and button contacts are mechanical, not optical. The two pins on one side are for the press button. The three on the other are common (centre pin) with A and B channels on either side. Very easy to wire into an Arduino. I recommend the phi_interfaces library, and the phi_rotary_encoders class in particular. I had it sending 'U' and 'D' responses to my Arduino in a couple of minutes. Just beware that if you are after a rotary encoder for something of consequence apart from experimentation, I'd recommend looking at the (Japanese) Alps range of rotary encoders. They make a huge range of them, and you can almost certainly get one to your exact requirements for under a fiver, which is going to feel nicer, last longer and...

Perfect breadboard-friendly KY-040 encoders, 18 April 2017
These encoders don't have any model number, but look and work exactly like a typical KY-040.If you are using them with an Arduino you don't need any pullup resistors (the built-in resistors suffice), meaning you simply connect the encoder directly to two data pins and a GND.It can be fitted to breadboard or prototype board (there are two bigger legs that are only to fix it to custom PCB, those can be cut off). The 3 pins on one side are Data1, GND, Data2, and the 2 pins on the other are Switch and GND.
