i got this for my son who is 3yrs old.i think it is a good, durable product which does what it is suppose to.only downside is that there are no units, tens, thousands, etc markings on the side to help them understand how the numbers grow

The main problem with this abacus is that it only has 70 beads. There are 7 rows of 10. It's preferable to have an abacus that has 100 beads, as your child can practice counting in 10s up to 100 (instead of having to stop at 70!).The other problem is with the numbers printed on the front of the abacus. These don't actually correlate to the position of the beads, so you could have 10 beads, but they only reach to the number 7, which is confusing for the child. I ended up turning the abacus around, so that my little boy wasn't distracted by the numbers. All in all, I wish I'd spent the extra on the Melissa and Doug abacus; it would have been worth the outlay.
