The starting point for this review is that I dislike electric shavers. They make me very sore and although after using one I look like I have shaved, I certainly don't feel like I have. I get on ok with wet shaving but I dislike the wet and the mess. So every other day I have a wet shave, and the days in between I use a very old cheap Philishave and I hate it. I have a tough beard, for about 50 years I kept it as a big tough beardy wierdy. So now I am regularly using an electric shaver I thought I would look at the reviews and find a better one. The very expensive Braun 790 with its bells and whistles cleaning and charging station seemed to be hignly regarded and a friend has one, so why not give it a go. But at £200 for the cheapest I could find, this would be an expensive waste of time if this was just another rotten sore-making un-shaving shaver. I have always used electric shavers and have tried many brands, including Philips, Remington and several Braun models. Until the purchase of the Braun 720s-4 I have been somewhat dissatisfied with all of them.
I was apprehensive about buying a Series 7 Braun because it was both expensive and had a dual cutter similar to the one used on the Braun 5614 - which was easily the worst shaver I have ever used. My concern was ill-founded because after 4 months of use I can say that the Braun 720s-4 is by far the best shaver that I have ever used.
The dual floating head is so much more effective than the fixed type of dual head used on the 5614, and it ensures that the cutters are always in maximum contact with the face. Using a pre-electric shaving lotion helps to raise the whiskers, lubricates the skin, and importantly also lubricates the cutters. Enjoy the video demonstration? Great. Here's the verdict after comparing the shaved side of my face to the other.
Firstly I'm an electric shaver virgin because the decent ones are quite expensive, so I approached this with caution when testing it, starting on the Sensitive setting. Although not dense fuzz, I left my beard a few days before testing the razor properly. In the video I shaved half my face to compare results.
My general opinion of the razor is that it's good, almost as good as a triple blade razor, and for someone like me who leaves my beard to grow for weeks, a lot quicker and less messy than blades and foam.
Giving yourself a full shave requires a little shaving, shaving against the grain, then tautening the area of skin to capture the remaining stubble for the best results, such as under your jawline.
After repeat strokes the blades seem to shread your stubble into some kind of beard juice (?)...
