Darn expensive, but the bee's knees of shaving oils, 25 Jan. 2010

I've always had sensitive skin when it comes to shaving, suffering razor burn and rash. For many years I used shaving foam, but on a health spa visit I was given a free sample of this Decleor shaving oil. What a revelation it was. Provided you keep a sharp razor and shave religiously every day (which I admit I tend to be too lazy to do in general, partially because of the burn and rash), just a couple of drops of this oil is sufficient to give an amazingly clean shave, conditioning the skin leaving it silky soft and smooth, and really reducing razor burn and rash. The subtle scent of clove oil is very pleasing too.It's an expensive oil though, so I have tried out many other less expensive shaving oils since, but none have been as good as this. The closest I have found is Somersets Extra Sensitive Shaving Oil, which is the best budget buy. This latter I tend to use as an everyday oil, and the Decleor as a 'special occasion' oil.

Research has established that fragrances in skin-care products are among the most common cause of sensitizing and allergic reactions. Your skin may not look irritated or inflamed, but in reality below the surface, irritating ingredients including fragrance, can cause collagen to breakdown, and compromise the skins ability to fight daily environmental stress and damage.This oil may smell nice, and it contains helpful jojoba oil, but is badly let down by the addition of clove essential oil, that contains eugenol, a volatile substance that research has shown damages the skin, and eucalyptus essential oil. Eucalyptus oil has antimicrobial and antifungal activity, but is also a potent skin irritant due to its chemical components. Not something you want to add to skin prior to the trauma and irritation wet shaving can cause. I had a bad reaction to fragrant essential oils, which led me to do more research into their benefits and risks. I would encourage others to do the same.

the results are not nearly as good as with a wet shave, 13 July 2015

When away from home I find it more convenient to have an electric shave but, having a tough beard, the results are not nearly as good as with a wet shave. However, when using Decleor Aromaessence before electric shaving the result is almost as good. It is the best pre electric I have found.
