Smooth as a baby's bum, 2 Mar. 2015

With more blades than Edward Scissorhands, the Gillette Fusion razor does give me a smooth, clean shave. I have to admit that I only shave about twice a week - three times if I want to impress the boss (or Mrs Crookedmouth) - so this razor head has a fairly punishing routine dealing with several days worth of growth. It performs well enough. I have still to be convinced that the more blades a razor sports the better the shave but happy to admit that this is much smoother than a single or double blade razor. That said, I do still use an old, disposable two-blade to tidy up side burns - with a smaller blade head it's much more precise than a 5 bladed head.

Allegedly the Flexball thing is supposed to make this razor more maneouvrable than a "normal" razor that only hinges in one direction. The Flexball allows the head to pivot in two axes but, to be honest, it makes NO difference to my shave at all. I'm pretty sure that it's just a gimmick, introduced because the...

Verdict : The best Gillette manual razor yet., 1 Mar. 2015

This razor was tested by my resident adult son and this is his verdict.

Gillette razors and blades are his usual choice and he very much liked this new FlexBall style of Fusion razor, which is designed for maximum skin contact/hair removal. The 5 Gillette blades are as sharp and efficient as ever and the pivoting ball-joint really does twist and turn to allow the blade to follow facial contours.

Gillette make the claim that the FlexBall razor 'gets virtually every hair' and he would agree. Definitely the best non-powered razor he has used. He has quite sensitive skin so doesn't shave when he doesn't have to, but there was no soreness.

With 9 blades supplied in the pack, he will have enough razors for most of this year.

The FlexBall product packaging is of necessity a bit tricky to get into (kitchen scissors time) and rather large. Being identical to those in retail outlets, it is no doubt designed like this for security reasons.

For anyone who has the old...

yes shave / no save, 24 Feb. 2015

Are Gillette still the best a man can get? Even if not, the marketing strapline will surely stay forever.

This new powerball variation on a successful Fusion Proglide theme doesn't add a huge amount to an already good razor and even the powered version did little to improve the standard version which has served well for many years. So yes it's a great razor that is built to last and the blades provide a smooth, knick free shave every time.

From experience and a shave most mornings each single blade can last at least a month or two on a day or two's growth. If you change blades every week the question is why and then if so it becomes mighty expensive. And that's the main issue here, cost.

If you count a Gillette Fusion retails for around a fiver and a pack of 8 blades around £16 then this pack isn't quite the deal it purports. Plus there are often deals in the high street for razor and blade intro packs albeit fewer blades.

Impossible to not...
