I wasn't sure if I really needed a manual breast pump and bought one "just in case" (in case I want my hubby to feed our baby, in case I get sick...). I have no experience with other breast pumps neither manual nor electric but I was very pleased with this one. I started using it about 4 weeks after birth, didn't really need it and started pumping again when we started giving additional food, first to relieve my breasts and then to collect milk which turns out to be splendid for my babies porridge.
The pump is easily assembled and disassembled. The individual parts can all be boiled for sterilization which I would do at the end of the day.
The pump is really easy to use. One hand holds the breast in a c-grip and the fingers can "squeeze out" parts of the breast, the other hand pumps. I pump exclusively, day in day out, and with my first born I used an advent electric - I wished to God I had bought this pump this time around!
Pros - Good suction, easy to put together/take apart and clean, comes with spare parts (NEEDED, especially if using pump a lot - further explanation below), faster than an electric pump (got the milk fully out within 10 minutes for both sides after 2 hours as opposed to 30 minutes with the Advent electric), inexpensive to buy.
Cons - Have to switch hands to stop cramping after a while. If using the pump frequently, the valves and the diaphragm stop working after a time. LANSINOH NO LONGER DO THE SPARE PARTS FOR THIS OLDER MODEL OF PUMP!! So, if the included spare parts fail on you, you're screwed basically and have to buy a whole new pump as I found out after contacting them (Lansinoh customer service however is fantastic) although the pump is so cheap (the cost of two tins of formula) it's not like it's a major financial...
