Ideal for those breast feeding, 11 Sept. 2011
I ordered a calma when my son was first born as I intended to breast feed but wanted my husband to be able to feed him breast milk on occasions. When my son was 4 weeks old we used it for the first time and it was almost like he didn't even notice the difference. We didn't use it again until he was 6 weeks and, again, there was no problem with him taking it. It wasn't until he was 8 weeks that we began using it regularly and I have to say I love the calma. Yes, it's more expensive than normal teats, however because baby has to work for his food there is less likelihood of over-feeding and/or choking. I read the reviews on amazon before ordering the calma and I have to say that even at 4 weeks my son had no issues using the calma or being able to get milk using it. I fully recommend it to every parent who intends to breast feed.

Closest to breastfeeding, 5 Feb. 2012

We have been feeding my baby expressed milk on occasion since she was 3 weeks old, but we didn't discover this teat until she was just over 3 months old. Previously we were using Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature or Philips Advent bottles and teats. We weren't happy with those brands, as my baby picked up some bad habits that hurt me when she was back on the boob. She also started to get a bit lazy on the breast and would only drink the foremilk on occasion.

The Madela Calma teat works brilliantly. As the baby sucks, you can see the milk being sucked through the teat and it does very much look like the way milk comes out of the breast. Since we've been using this teat, my baby has dropped the bad habits she had picked up and transitions much easier between breast and bottle.

The teat is simple to assemble and clean. There are 3 parts, and it's very easy to clean.

It is quite different from other teats and can throw off people who've never used one...

Expensive but very good, 30 Sept. 2015
I got it together with the Medela breast pump and since then bought two more of those teats. It's great addition when you are breastfeeding, my little one had only a slight problem with adjusting to it (apparently we started using it too late, at 4-5 months when I was still exclusively breastfeeding, and she was much more aware of what was going on). Since about 6 months we've been alternating breastfeeding and formula and my daughter never had a problem with switching. Yes, it is much more expensive than other teats but I think it's worth it if you want to alternate between breast and bottle. The only advice I can give you is not to buy very expensive Medela bottles but use the much cheaper basic bottles from Boots. They fit just as well.
