Good, clear audio and rechargeable parent unit, compact design, 19 Sept. 2015

This is a mid-range baby monitor that has all the features you'll need for listening to your baby. The rechargeable parent unit is excellent for carrying about in the house, so you don't have to be near a plug all the time to use it.

It's quite compact so won't take up lots of space in your baby's room (it must be positioned at least 1 metre from the cot and all the wires must be out of the reach of the baby) and the portable unit is small enough to put in your pocket. The funny little wire with the bobble on the end that is attached to the baby unit is a thermometer to give you a constant live-feed of what the temperature is in the baby's room. This is very useful if the room is south facing and gets a lot of sun or if you leave a small window open in winter for ventilation and want to check it's not getting too cold.

Because this monitor is DECT, it doesn't get crackly interference. It's got a good range, I could still hear my baby clearly from the end of my...

Buy this if you don't want to sleep again, 18 Jan. 2016

There is a big flaw with this baby monitor. It will start beeping loudly for no reason and the volume settings doesn't affect this beeping. Sometimes it beeps when it looses the link and trying to reconnect. It should only do that if it fails to reconnect after 20 seconds for instance.

But the most annoying thing is when it starts beeping for no reason. It is supposed to beep when there is noise coming from the baby's room but it starts beeping even when our son is quiet and so the monitor wakes up my wife, me and more importantly our new born baby who is sleeping in our bedroom.

Oddly enough there is a setting called "Sound alert" I thought you could toggle the beeping on and off. The instruction manual says: "Turn sound alert on or off. You can turn on the sound alert so that the parent unit beeps when a loud sound is detected by the baby unit".

No matter if I set it off. It doesn't work. I thought maybe I got a defective unit. So I ask for a exchange...

Good monitor with all the features you need (and some you don't), 14 Sept. 2015

I have used a number of Philips, Motorola and BT baby monitors, from the simple no frills monitors to the fancy light-show monitors. This Motorola 161 sits somewhere in the middle.

The monitor 'walkie-talkie' function works fine - I could hear baby whenever they made a significant noise and I had no experience of loss of connection between the baby unit and parent unit.

The ability to monitor the temperature of baby's room is a reassuring addition, which I have always found useful as an objective guide when deciding the number of blankets to use or the thickness of the gro-bag. The monitor will also play a selection of lullabies, which I found to be a bit robotic sounding but baby didn't seem to mind. You can also talk from the parent unit to the baby unit - I have never found a valid use for this as a quick trip into baby's bedroom is clearly a far better way of communicating with baby. The monitor also allows you to set timers for feeding, nappy changing and...
