A good secondary shaver and effective stubble trimmer, 30 July 2014

This Philips YS527/17 combined shaver and stubble trimmer looks and feels well made being finished in black with subtle blue detailing. In the box you get the main handle unit, stubble trimming head, shaving head with protective cover, charger (with two pin shaver plug), cleaning brush and instructions/warranty. The instructions are visual rather than textual and it's easy to get the gist of them.

In use it's easy to transform this unit from stubble trimmer to shaver and vice versa - the two heads just click on and off. The stubble trimmer has an adjustable cut control which although simple works well. The shaver attachment features two of the familiar Philips circular cutters with a collection compartment for the cut hairs. The handle is well shaped and easy to grip with an on/off switch and LED battery/charge indicator. The whole device can be rinsed under the tap as the handle and two heads are waterproof. So-so shave, brilliant trim, 11 Oct. 2014

I've been using a Philips 3 foil shave with a built in dispenser for a of years now and the only problem I have with it is trimming longer hairs (like a weeks coupleweeksh rather than 1-2 days) so I jumped at the chance to review this.

First impressions, it feels cheap and bulky, however after a couple of months use I've no worries about it falling apart, and the size in my hand is fine.

The shave is okay, nothing amazing, I've been spoilt by the Philips I had before, i never realised how great it was to dispenser the cream through the blade. No problems, no grabbing or pulling.

The trimmer though is brilliant, I use it without the guard to bring everything back to short stubble. I can then either leave it like that and trim it back once a week or shave it back to smooth with the razor head.

If I could fit this trimmer head to my old Philips it would be perfect, but this does 90% of what I need, very good overall. I'd recommend this as a first...

Won't set the shaver market on fire, 2 Sept. 2014

Like others it was only after ordering that I spotted that this was (and I quote) "[aimed at] young men (16 - 25 years)". In that case I am not the products target audience, but although I like my Philips Nivea 3 head shaver, it doesn't have a beard trimmer. So I had designs on ditching the ancient mains powered Philips I keep just for that purpose, and going to this instead.To cut a long story short, the beard trimmer attaches, quite badly I think, on the unit and feels very flimsy. It almost makes you wonder if Philips designed this as a cheap travel shaver (which it would be fine as!) and then decided to change the brief.I had no problems with battery life, and the fact it's waterproof like my 3 head unit is a bonus. All in all though, I'll stick with what I've got, I think.
