Great dual pump (update) fault developed after 3 months use, 23 Oct. 2014

This pump performs very well, and the adjustable pump settings help make expressing as comfortable as possible. For comparison, I have used the hospital-grade Medela symphony (at the hospital), and this pump works just as well, at a fraction of the price, and actually has more user-adjustable features than the symphony. I have also used the Medela Swing and the Spectra 3. The Spectra 3 is a great value dual pump that lasted well with frequent use. However, it doesn't have the features of the Spectra S2- no let-down setting, and pump frequency is not adjustable. I personally think it is worth a bit extra money for the S2, as I find I can express the same volume of milk with a lower suction settings and greater comfort. The Medela Swing is convenient for portable use, but is much slower, so I prefer my Spectra dual pump at home.

**Update**

After three months I still regularly use this pump, but have to make one note about it's durability. My pump has developed a...

A must for expressing mothers!, 6 May 2014

I had tried two different manual pumps which I hated, and ended up expressing by hand. A friend lent me her electric pump - a type that you cannot buy in the UK - and I was converted! I did a lot of research before I purchased this one and I am so glad I got this. Its is very quiet - I am able to express while in the same room as my sleeping daughter (who is a light sleeper let me add), it has a night light of two brightnesses, a good selection of pump speeds and strengths, and a timer which is very helpful (I double pump each time which takes 8-12mins). There is a setting to help get your let down, but to be honest I just start it on a lower strength and increase once the milk comes. It comes with two bottles that you express into (we just poor into our Avent bottles as that's what our daughter is used to). It is so easy to clean, there are just 3 parts for each breast - the bottle, the breast cup and the small drainer plug - which need to be sterilised each time. Its comfortable...

Promising, but Ultimately Poor Quality Pump, 4 Aug. 2015

We've been renting a Medela Symphony since the birth of our son, but at £45pcm we set about buying a pump outright, which would save money in the long-term. After looking at product reviews, we decided on the Spectra S2 based on performance, feature and claimed low noise.

Unfortunately the reality for us is as follows. The pump is noisy and the vibrations do travel through the floorboards when being used upstairs. The display often fails. Finally the light isn't reliable.

Whilst the Medela Symphony doesn't have a light, it is a more robust unit and quieter.

The only place the Spectra does win out is its use of "duck" (think of a duck bill) valves. The too pliant, thin flat valve of the Medela fails too easily. We're going to see if the Spectra duck valve works on the Symphony because the fitting is the same.

The amount of milk expressed however does seem comparable.

Given our experience, we've sent it back and have...
