VEX Robotics Scarab by HEXBUG is available in Motor Activity Toys

HEXBUG VEX Robotics encourages STEM learning through hands-on play as you construct your very own jumbo-sized robot and customize its programming! The Scarab kit includes over 250 snap together pieces and a centralized brain to bring it to life. Drive the robot manually with a remote control, or choose autonomous drive mode and watch the Scarab scurry around all by itself, mimicking real-life movement. This kit is cross-compatible with other HEXBUG VEX Robotics kits. The Scarab includes 6 legs, 2 IR distance sensors and interlocking gears. It crawls low to the ground and avoids obstacles in its path using its distance sensors. You can control its range of motion by altering the leg's gear system. There are 64 different programming variations to choose from. To program, simply flip a series of switches on the robot's brain, allowing for quick experimentation with different modes to determine how it reacts when the sensors are activated.

We had great fun building it but, 3 Jan. 2016
Christmas present for my 9 year old son. We had great fun building it but!...., he did need some help. 3 AA batteries and 1 9v battery are required. We were very disappointed that the sensors do not work, there is no response at all when it approaches objects and will just crash into them. The Scarab doesn't work at all on the auto setting - nothing. There is no guide to the programming using the slide switches (On the web, looking for help with this problem, I have seen a chart supplied showing the effects of different combinations of switches - this would be useful!. With all these variables and no guidance it makes tracing the fault impossible. I am also disappointed that it is not easier to contact Amazon directly about this. I hope that Amazon will contact me quickly with a resolution, I am reluctant to return the product for a replacement, as that would mean having to build a second one.

ANGRY!, 1 Jan. 2015

I was looking forward to receiving this product as a Christmas present for my son. One which was on his Christmas list. It arrived as expected and I quickly hid it from him. 2 weeks later as he opened it at Christmas he was so excited to get it up and running. How disappointed we were to find out that it didn't have any batteries(after stating on the product description that AA batteries were included). After purchasing not one but two types of battery(which would have helped in the product description that you would have to purchase a 9V battery) he got what seemed like one hour of play with this toy that he'd been wanting for so long. You can imagine his disappointment when the handset controller stopped working. We had purchased a rechargeable 9V battery and charger especially for this toy. It wouldn't work. We thought there was something wrong with the battery or the charger so today I purchased two Duracell 9V batteries thinking this will allow him to play as after all he had...

Very disappointing, 13 Aug. 2016
Very disappointed ... we bought this and an ant.The Scarab continually falls apart - either the top pops off or cogs come out. Remote controller does not work at all. We know its the controller as we can sync the ant controller and make it work, for about 15 seconds before it falls apart again.
